Chief Judge John McCarthy Roll was among the victims of a gunman who shot at least 18 people in an apparent attempt to assassinate Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Roll was a well-respected jurist who served as a state court judge and on the Arizona Court of Appeals before his appointment to the federal bench in 1991 by President Bush. Lawyers interviewed for the Almanac of the Federal Judiciary said Roll had “excellent legal skills” and knew “how to treat lawyers." Roll is survived by his wife Maureen, three sons, and five grandchildren.
